Years of research has proven that common colds result largely from an imbalance of the Kapha and Vata doshas. Vata is primarily responsible for the immune system and Kapha is responsible for the respiratory system and lungs.
Both Kapha and Vata usually contain ginger, considered to be the best medicine for colds. Ginger, holy basil (also known as tulsi), cinnamon, licorice, black pepper and cloves help to restore balance to Kapha. Turmeric keeps the lungs clear of phlegm and activates the liver. It is good practice to use turmeric for the elderly as it strengthens their sometimes-weak immune system.
Warm temperatures are important to activate the complete balance in Kapha and Vata. Honey and cinnamon strengthen the immune system and protect the body from bacteria and viral attacks.
